SPM Bahasa Melayu: Part 2

How to Ace that Test!

The method you should use to improve your command of Bahasa Melayu is largely dependent on two things, your current proficiency/fluency level and how much time you have left to your main goal which is SPM. If you usually get As or Bs, you can just use the fast method. If you're getting Cs and below, use the slow method if you've got the time(6 months or more) and the fast method if you don't. Basically the general rule of thumb is no matter your profiency level, if you've got a lot of time use the slow method.

Fast and Furious
For all my fellow procrastinators out there. This is for you.
  • Read summaries for all the cerpen, drama, prosa tradisional and novel.
  • Memorise the rumusan and karangan format
-It's in a seperate post cause it's too long to include here
Yup. That's really it.

Slow and Steady (... wins the race. )
You would need at least 3 months to see any significant improvement to your exam results but it'll all be worth it when your BM becomes da' bomb!
  • Talk more in BM
-Ask your Malay friends to speak to you in BM only and explain why.
-Or just keep replying them in BM(regardless of what language they are speaking) until they  take the hint.
  • Watch the Malay news shows on TV 1, TV 2 and TV 7
  • Watch Malay movies and series
  • Turn on the BM subtitles for everything you watch
  • Read some Malay books/comics.
  • Write BM essays and asking your teacher to mark them and explain your mistakes to you.

Malay movies and series sometimes use Manglish but it's still a effective and not to mention fun way to improve your BM. You can put on subtitles in the language you are fluent in(English, Chinese, Tamil, etc), if you can't keep up with the speed that they talk. After you get better in BM, you should move on to BM subtitles. Your final goal should be to be able to watch the movie with no subtitles at all.

Recommendations:
Movies- Pisau Cukur, Polis Evo, Gol & Gincu
Series- Bawang Putih Bawang Merah, Gol & Gincu

Malay books usually use a mix of slang BM and English but they are still pretty good for impoving basic vocabulary and giving you a rough idea on how sentences should be structured.

Recommendations:
-Impiana series(Mystery, Thriller)
-School library books
-Malay books translated from English(Sherlock Holmes and the like)

For comics, you can try..
-The BM version of the X-Venture series
-Manga(Japanese comics) like Doraemon or Detective Conan
