Prepping for the One Year War

How does one prepare for the horror that is Form 5?

Things you'll need:
  • Past year questions books
-Topical or full length paper is up to your own preference
  • A lot of good pens
  • 2 mechanical pencils
-Cause ain't nobody got time to sharpen pencils!
  • A truckload of correction tape

Tips for:
Past Year Questions
  • Buy only for the subjects you are weak in or unsatisfied with.
  • Don't buy for language subjects because they're completely useless.
-buy a novel in that language instead
-make sure the novel isn't too easy or too hard
  • Topical or full length papers?
Topical books when you are either:
    -In Form 4/early Form 5(Jan-May)

    Full length when:
    -nearing SPM

    Both if you're:
-Really bad at the subject(getting C/D/E/G)
-Okay(getting B/C) at the subject but completely useless at certain topics
The points I gave above are just a rough guide to make it easier for you decide between topical or full length papers. My friend who scored straight As used topical books all the way. It's comes down to your own preference.

Stationery
I've gone through my fair share of weird and crappy brands of stationery. Here I'm gonna help you avoid that torture by listing down the brands that I have personally found good.

Pens
  • Gel pen or ball point pen?
I never use gel pens cause many of my friends gel pens have exploded; splattering ink everywhere. Also, my teachers always stress that you should never ever use gel pens in an exam because there is a chance that the ink will become smudged. This is esp. important in countries with a lot flooding like Malaysia cause once it's wet the writing becomes virtually unreadable. Still a lot of people prefer gel pens but I highly suggest that you use them only for non-examination related stuff like homework. Better safe than sorry.
  • 0.5 mm or 0.7 mm?
I prefer 0.7 mm cause writing feels smoother but I have friends who find that their handwriting looks neater with 0.5 mm. So, just go to a stationery shop and test it out and see which one fits you best. Then, buy like 5 of the point you like and 1 the point size you don't like because you might end up changing your mind after long term usage.
  • Erasable ink pens
Pens like the Frixion erasable ink pens are a bad idea for exams(according to my teacher) cause there have been cases of the writing disappearing after being left in the vault(the place where) for some time. Of course, I cannot confirm this info so yeah. Use at your own risk.
  • Brands
    Gel pens
    -Pilot G2

    Ball point pens
    -Faber-Castell Ball Pen 1423

    -Faster CX 1076 Ball Pen

Mechanical Pencils
Any mechanical pencil is fine but don't get the shaker kind. You know, the really irritating one that you have to shake to get out the lead. Yeah. Don't buy that. Somebody's gonna punch you in the middle of the Maths exam. Also, buy the branded mechanical pencils only. They'll last longer.

Correction Tape
Buying the bad correction tape is the worst because:
1. It's the most expensive part of your stationery.
2. It's a pain to fix cause the tape it's long af.
  • Is it worth it to buy the more expensive ones?
Yes. They last longer and they're usually refillable.
  • Refillable or non-refillable?
Always buy refillable. In the long run it'll be cheaper cause refills are usually cheaper than buying a whole new correction tape.
  • Tape Width
Not too wide that it covers the entire space in your line book from line to line.
About 4-5 mm is just nice for me.
  • Brands
They're both my favourite but I prefer Plus cause its cheaper than Papermate and I'm a bit kedekut.

    -Plus Whisper Mr.

    -Papermate DryLine Ultra
You can also find out if the brand you wanna buy is good by googling "Brand + item reviews".
For example, Staedtler(Brand) colour pencil(item) reviews.  You could also just test them out that shop since stationery shops usually have a piece/stack of paper hanging just above their pen section.
